Please check facebook for weather/course updates.
The surfski class will be unlimited, therefore you can win overall even if you’re entered in a non-surfski category.
Medals will be awarded to the following:
- Women’s Surfski Champion
- Men’s Masters (40+) Surfski Champion
- Women’s Masters (40+) Surfski Champion
- Men’s OC1
- Women’s OC1
- Men’s SUP
- Women’s SUP
It is required that you wear a PFD (inflatable devices are not allowed) and it must have a whistle attached to it. Bringing a leash is required however if we are doing the out and back course, wearing it is not required. There will be no safety boat. It is strongly suggested that all participants know how to remount prior to the race.
We’ll have some sandwich fixin’s, so be sure to rsvp “going” on facebook or (even better) register online at the bottom of this page, that way Sandy will know how much to bring.
When driving to Stewart Beach, go left of the big building, drive onto beach.
There are several extra surfski’s available if you want to try one out. Let us know ahead of time and we’ll try to get you set up.
Feel free to call/text for questions to Tommy Yonley at 832-443-5194
We are also excited that immediately BEFORE the race, Shamrock Paddling will be offering a free clinic about Open Water Paddling.
Shamrock Paddling Company LLC was founded in Houston Texas, offering Surfski lessons focused on proper technique and safety to build overall confidence and paddling performance. Matt Murphy, owner and ACA Certified Surfski Instructor, started this company to grow the sport of open water sursfki paddling in Texas. Follow them on Facebook or Instagram @shamrockpaddling or send them an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Clinic Outline: The clinic will be an informational session about open water paddling, approximately 30 minutes, on land only with no equipment or previous experience required. The focus will be on preparing for open water paddling, including safety preparation, equipment and rescue techniques. As a surfski instructor some of the material will be specific to that paddling discipline but most of the information will be useful for all disciplines (Outrigger Canoes, Kayaks and SUP).
o Assessing the Weather
o Float Plans
o Safety Kit
o Communication (VHF Marine Radio and Personal Locator Beacon)
o PFD and Leg Leash
* Rescue Techniques
o Open water remounting tips
o Assisted rescue techniques
After the clinic Matt will be available to answer questions about open water surfski and downwind paddling or about scheduling a lesson.
American Canoe Association (ACA): The ACA National Paddlesports Instruction Program has been acknowledged as the premier paddlesports education program throughout the United States and in over 30 countries. Surfski is the latest discipline introduced by the ACA with the objective of growing the sport nationally by increasing its accessibility to all paddlers not just the elite athlete.
