2020 Texas River Marathon-canceled
TWS Update in response to COVID-19
April 1, 2020
Due to the current pandemic known as Coronavirus or Covid-19 the Texas Water Safari Board has made the decision to cancel the prelim “River Marathon”, postpone the Texas Water Safari and cancel the Junior Texas Water Safari.
The prelim “River Marathon,” to be held on May 2, is canceled and will not be rescheduled this year. For those who have already preregistered full refunds will be issued, including the service handling fee.
The Texas Water Safari (TWS) will NOT be held June 13 – 17 (the second weekend in June) but is rescheduled to September 12 – 16. Race Check-In will be on Friday, September 11. For racers that have preregistered for the Texas Water Safari to be held June 13-17 and chose not to race in September, refunds will be issued upon request by emailing email@example.com, including the service handling fee. There will be no price increases this year. Registration fee will remain at $175 per racer.
The Junior Texas Water Safari will not be held or be rescheduled.
We know this will not work for all, but the TWS board felt this was the best solution for a fluid situation that changes daily. This will hopefully allow for the pandemic to play out and allow for a great race this September.
Details are still being ironed out on registration deadlines, how we will determine starting positions, etc. Once these details are finalized, we will post them on our website and Facebook page.
This was not an easy decision because we know how important the race is to all, but we felt this is the best solution to help ensure racer’s safety, allow more time to train and for the Coronavirus to run its course.

Statement is on website at www.texaswatersafari.org
Saturday, May 2 7 a.m. Checkin begins 9 a.m. Start Online registration only except for race day. Team Captain is required. Online registrations must supply boat number for the race.
Starting at the River Haven RV Resort in Cuero and running to the Pump House Restaurant in Victoria, Texas, this 35-mile race runs over some of the fastest water on the Texas Water Safari course. Elapsed times for this race in high water can be breathtakingly fast and it is a highly competitive race, while being fun for all concerned.
Although the Texas River Marathon (also known as “The Prelim”) is used to determine starting positions for the Texas Water Safari, it is NOT mandatory to race this race in order to race the Texas Water Safari.
In addition to qualifying teams for superior starting positions, this event provides racers with the opportunity to see a couple of the only real rapids on the racecourse. Many Texas Water Safari racers will traverse the “Nursery rapids” during the night and it can be very helpful to have seen them during the daylight first, during the Texas River Marathon.
Teams should note: the cut-off deadline for reaching Hwy 447 Nursery Bridge is 1:00 p.m. and at least one team captain is required for this race. Any changes to this cut-off will be announced at race briefing. T-shirts will be given to all teams, and one team captain per team, if entered on or before April 3. As with all TWS sponsored races, Safari rules and classes apply.
Entry Fee: $35 (through April 3), $45 (through April 17), $60 (race day) per paddler. No entry fee for team captains.
We no longer accept registration by mail – this race is online registration only, except for in-person registration on race day. At east one Team Captain is required. See the official TWS website for full calendar, rules and event registration links.
